Hi, I’m Julie with Confessions of a Cooking Diva. I’m excited to be a contributor for Mother’s Niche. I’ll be providing monthly cooking tips and tricks. On my blog, I love to share all my favorite recipes and encourage people to jump in the kitchen and cook versus going out every day for meals.
Today, I’m going to share how to clean and slice leeks. A leek is a wonderful produce from the onion family. They have a great mild onion flavor, perfect if you like onions, but don’t love how strong they can be. They can be used in soups, sauces, omelets, quiches, etc. They are so versatile.
Leeks can be a challenge because they are very dirty and intimidating with their size, but with just a few steps you can have these babies cleaned and sliced.

How to clean and slice leeks –
Step 1 – Wash and dry your leeks. It's good to get the initial dirt off them.
Step 2 – Cut off the long dark green stalks, be sure to leave a little bit of green. You want to use that in your dishes.
Step 3 – Thinly slice your leeks into rings. Be sure to discard the hairy, root end.
Step 4 – Place leek rings into a bowl of cold water. Be sure to separate the rings so you get all the dirt between the rings.
Step 5 – Strain your leeks using a strainer and pat dry. They are now ready to go.
I hope you give leeks a try. They are a great alternative to the traditional onion.
Enjoy!
