DIY Birthday Cake Banner with Pom-Poms

If you're throwing a birthday party for someone, you might want to make your own birthday banner! If you're concerned about it being complicated or expensive, no need to worry! We've got all the instructions you'll need right in this article, and it won't cost you too much. You might even already have some of these supplies at home.

Key Points

  • All of this will likely only cost you several dollars, especially since you'll probably have a lot of these supplies at home!
  • This is a fun project for you to undertake alone, or with someone else's help!
  • Take your time, and don't be too hard on yourself if you mess up! You can always re-start the project.

Supplies

You won't need too many supplies for this project! There's a good chance you already have some of these at home. All together, this should not cost you more than ten dollars or so.

  • Paper
  • Glue stick
  • Silhouette cutter, or scissors (We recommend the first)
    • For banner pieces & letters
  • String
    • Banner string
    • Sewing thread
  • Pom-poms
  • Two dowels or sticks of any sort
  • Sticker letters, if you prefer

Step by Step Instructions to Make Your Banner

1. Gather your paper choices and cut out your papers using your silhouette. There's a lot of silhouette templates that you can find online. We've got one at the bottom of this article, if you're interested!

If you want a variety of colors in your birthday banner, you are going to have to use a lot of different colors of paper. By doing this, you will end up with a lot of extra paper banners. Keep them! Use them on cards, or make more hanging banners for chalk boards or signs.  Give your friends a Happy Birthday Banner for their birthdays! There are endless uses for these paper banners.

2. Lay out your paper based on how you want your color scheme to go.

3. Take your little paper tags and fold them in half.

4. Lay out a long piece of sting. Find the middle, and start gluing your folded banner pieces over the string. Consider starting in the middle and working your way out so that everything is as equal as possible.

Make sure your string does NOT twist on you. If it does, some of the banner pieces will end up a little twisted!

5. Take your cut letters and glue them to your banner. Or, use sticker letters if you prefer.  Use your silhouette to cut out your letters. We recommend the font American Typewriter, but feel free to experiment with other font silhouettes!

6. Take some fabric thread, thread a needle and string your pom-poms onto your string.

7. Tie your strings onto the dowels. Tie the two birthday strings together. Then, tie the pom-pom string above the birthday sign.

If you'd like to use a template that one of our other writers created, feel free to check it out! Make sure to take your time with this, and don't be too hard on yourself if you make a mistake. After all, arts and crafts can be a little tricky sometimes! As long as you follow our steps, though, you should do just fine. Happy crafting!
