I love what happens to my hair when we go to Hawaii. I've always had straight, lifeless hair, but when we play in the ocean and the sea salt hits my hair, there's a sort of “beach waves” magic that happens. All of a sudden I have a little volume and texture! Since I can't live in Hawaii forever (I wish), I decided to make a DIY Sea Salt Spray to use at home so that I can still get the “beach waves hair” look, away from the ocean.
And by the way, if you DO ever get the chance to go to Hawaii, see our post full of Hawaii Tips, as well as How to do a Hawaii Vacation on a Budget. 103 Free Things to Do in Oahu, and Maui vs. Kauai.

But for now, let's get back to the beach waves. This DIY Sea salt spray is not just a beach waves spray, it's more of a sea salt texturizing spray. Meaning, even if you aren't going for that “messy beach wave look,” You can still use this sea salt spray to give your hair some extra texture, and to make your curls last longer.
I've never been able to keep curls in my hair all day long because my hair is so dang straight. But this sea salt spray not only kept my curls, but I woke up with them still going strong the next day!
DIY Sea Salt Spray Recipe
- 1 Cup Hot Water
- 3 TB Sea Salt
- 1 TB Sugar
- Optional moisturizing option: Coconut oil, hair oil leave-in conditioner, aloe vera gel, etc.
Combine all the ingredients into a high-quality spray bottle and shake! Shake bottle prior to each use. Adding coconut oil or a leave-in conditioner will add moisture to your hair and also keep the spray nozzle from sticking too much. I used a glass spray bottle since I wanted to add essential oil to mine. Add your favorite essential oil or perfume if you want your sea salt spray to smell a certain way. I used Citrus Bliss in mine.
How to Get ‘Beach Waves' Hair
- Wondering how to get beach waves? There are several different ways. If your hair has a little bit of wave when it gets wet, you can simple spray this sea salt spray while it's wet and scrunch it a bit.
- If your hair is super straight, you can use your sea salt spray, and then braid your hair and sleep on it. Add a little more sea salt spray when you take out your braid, until you have your desired texture.
- If you're wondering how to get beach waves that are a little more wavy than what a braid will give you, this deep waver is the best curling iron for beach waves. It's a lot better than the 3-barrel iron we all used in our youth, and is a more of a “beach wave curler,” per say. It was recommended to me by some other bloggers and I love using it both in my hair and my girl's hair. Once you are done using the beach wave curler, add some of the texturizing sea salt spray for texture.
Why You Should Make Your Own Beach Waves Sea Salt Spray
There are a lot of Sea Salt Hair Sprays out there, also called a “beach waves spray,” that you can buy, but honestly I feel like this one works just as good, and it's so much cheaper than those $20 sprays! If you want a more flexible hold, try adding half the amount of salt and sugar to your recipe.

Great recipe! I just came online looking for a good sea spray for my hair and MOST contain the oils…. I have extremely fine hair and didn’t want to look like a wet rat, so yours is da bomb! I think the sugar helps give it volume without weighing it down with oils, and CITRUS BLISS! Yasssss <3 LOVE that oil, and I just got a new bottle!
