I have been wanting to prepare my family in case of emergencies for a while now, but for some reason never got around to it. It wasn’t until recently that I started making my first preparations.
I’m a firm believer that taking that first step is the hardest part. Sometimes you don’t know where to start (or you don’t feel you have the extra money) and that hinders you from doing anything.
After I took the first step, I found it was easy to keep going and have found myself extremely interested in making sure I have been thorough. If you find yourself in a similar position and haven’t made any emergency preparedness efforts, I would urge you to take one step forward. It gets easier after that 🙂 Here are some things we started with:
72-hr Kits. You may not feel like you have enough money to store up a 3-month supply of food. That’s okay. For now. Start with your 72-hour kits. This will likely be the first thing you use in case of an emergency. Sometimes it can take emergency responders days to get to your house if there has been a natural disaster. Don’t let your family thirst, starve or freeze to death during this time. Start now and get prepared. If you have a hectic schedule, get a kit already assembled. If you are short on funds, order something new for your kits with every spare change you get, or set aside a certain amount of funds each month. See our post on what to put in a 72-hr kit for both beginner and advanced lists.
Car Kits. Always have an emergency kit in your car should something happen and leave you stranded on the road. This often includes jumper cables, a blanket, a tow rope, a good first aid kit and more. For more details on what you should include in your emergency car kit, see here for some good ideas. You can also get a free printable list here: DIY Emergency Car Kit
Water. Since you can’t live long without water, it’s good to have some stored away. Visit our previous post for info on how much water you should store for emergencies.
Food. Food is another essential that you don’t want to be without. In certain emergencies, grocery store shelves can be wiped out in a matter of hours. Do you have enough food to live off of if you couldn’t go to the store for a period of time? If not, start by buying a little extra every time you go to the store. It’s also a good idea to have some freeze-dried food on hand for emergencies in case you need to leave your house. (Update: it’s been years since I wrote this post. I have since spent over a year trying every brand out there before I found the best long-term food storage. Make sure and check that post out before buying any emergency food)
Medical Kit. In case of natural disaster and other unknown emergencies, it’s also good to have a really good medical kit should you need to take care of a wound or severe bleeding before medical personnel should arrive.
Learn to Garden, or Use From Your neighbor’s garden. If you don’t feel like you have money to buy food storage, learn how to can & dehydrate food from your garden. If you don’t have a garden, chances are there’s someone in your neighborhood with too much garden food on their hands. Ask if you can use the extras for canning.
Other Essentials. After you have the basics, you can move on to higher levels of emergency preparedness (camping equipment, generator, etc.). It would also be a good idea to see what natural disasters are most likely to occur first according to your geographical location. If an Earthquake is likely, it might be wise to make preparations such as tying down your water, bolting in shelving units, etc.
