One of my biggest stresses used to be my children’s diet. Even if I were to give my kids a perfect diet (I don’t), they still get all kinds of treats and junk food at preschool, church, friends and neighbor’s houses. There just seems to be no way to avoid it. It used to stress me out, but recently I decided to just let it go. I do my best to make sure they get some proper nutrients every day, and I try not to worry about everything else.
Even in my own home it can be pretty tricky to get my very young kids (ages 2&3) to want to eat everything I make. It just doesn’t happen. They have certain things they are picky about, and rather than fight a battle every single day, there are a few ways that I try to make sure they are still getting nutrients during their “picky stages.”
Tricks for getting Nutrients into your toddler:
- First, I try to focus on the things I KNOW they like. For instance, my kids have always loved broccoli, sweet potatoes, and green beans. I buy lots of these and gradually try to introduce new favorites. When I am unsuccessful, I have their favorites to fall back on.
- Second, we do a lot of green smoothies at our house. This is a great way to pack in some greens (and even some chia seeds and other proteins) without the littles taking notice.
- Third, I try to make the snacks count. Snacks can make up 25% of a toddler’s diet, so I try really hard to make sure their snacks aren’t filled with processed junk. This includes fruit leather and fun on-the-go snacks that are healthy and organic.

I have fed Plum Organics to my kids since they were babies. I love their Mighty 4 Pouch Blends because it packs all your essential nutrients from 4 core food groups into one pouch (including vegetables and even chia seeds or quinoa). It’s the one pouch food besides applesauce that even my 3-year old will still eat. These are our favorite when we are on a road trip and need a quick, easy snack that isn’t full of junk.
