How to Get Rid of Oily Hair (Without Having to Buy An Oily Hair Shampoo)

Oily hair is such an annoying problem to have. But if you've been wondering how to get rid of oily hair, you have come to the right place! These 3 magical tips should have you taken care of in no time.

How to Get Rid of Oily Hair

Before we learn how to get rid of oily hair, we must first ask, “Why does hair get oily?” What causes oily hair in the first place?  Excess oil may be due to hormonal changes triggered by puberty, stress, pregnancy, menstruation, or hormonal medications, but excess oil on the scalp can also occur from stripping your hair of it's natural oils, or using oily hair products.

Whatever your reason for oily hair, here are a few tricks for how to make your hair less oily:

  • Wash less frequently. Believe it or not, before you can get rid of oily hair, you first need to train your hair not to need washings so often. When we wash our hair, we strip the hair of its natural oils, thus causing the scalp to over-produce oil to make up the difference. And then you find yourself in a never-ending cycle: continuously washing the hair to get rid of the oil, only to have to keep doing so. To get rid of oily hair you are going to need to start going longer between washes. Start with just one extra day, and then increase as the month goes on. Wear hats on days when you just can't stand the oil production, but stick with it! Also note that clear shampoo vs milky tends to be lighter on the hair.HOW TO GET RID OF OILY HAIR
  • Dry shampoo is going to be your best friend as you are training your hair to go longer in between washes. You might even consider putting some dry shampoo on your hair right after your dry it, so that it can start combatting the oil production before it's a problem!) This particular brand is a common favorite.
  • Apple cider vinegar Hair Rinse. If you're wondering how to get rid of oily hair, this is going to be the best things for you and it's super easy to do. An apple cider vinegar hair rinse helps restore your natural pH levels in the hair, and also gets rid of build-up.

Best Shampoo for Oily Hair

If you DO want to just buy a good shampoo for oily hair, the best shampoo for oily hair is going to be a clarifying one. You won't want to use this all the time though, as clarifying shampoos can be too harsh on your hair. Here is a list of clarifying shampoos sorted starting with the highest reviews. My trick for how to get rid of oily hair without having to buy oily hair shampoos
