We had so much fun with our Kids Buttefly Garden Kit a few weeks ago that we decided to do a second round with live butterflies AND ladybugs! We are having so much fun with these. I feel kind of dorky with how excited I get over the metamorphisis process, but it’s seriously so cool! Even my husband gets into it, so I can’t feel that dorky 🙂
If you want some other fun Summer Ideas, we have a list of 120 Summer Ideas and Things to Do in the Summertime (and some printables as well).
When you get the ladybug kit, you are sent some ladybug larvae that look like little alligator bugs:
At home with the kids? Instantly access any of these printable activity bundles to keep them learning!
You then drop them into their LadyBug Land with the included food and watch the bugs crawl around and eat for about a week.
They will then attach themselves to the walls of the ladybug Land and transform into pupas.
At this point they don’t move, and if I’m being honest, I thought they were dead, but sure enough, they emerged as ladybugs just 5-7 days later! At first they are soft and pale, and then they harden and get their spots.
Then you feed them raisins! So fun. You are guaranteed that at least 5 of your larvae will turn into ladybugs, which was the exact number for us! Although one of them got stuck in the bottom of the Ladybug Land. RIP Ladybug!
Technically you can watch them in their habitat for a couple weeks, but I was too nervous of another one getting stuck and dying on us, so we let them out after only a couple of days.
We LOVED both kits, but if you haven’t done one before, our favorite was for sure the Kids Butterfly Garden because the changes are so much more dramatic and the caterpillars get so huge!
