As part of our 30 Day Declutter Challenge, someone asked the question, “What if the majority of my clothes don’t bring me joy? I don’t really want to get rid of the ones that don’t and then only have 10 things left to wear, and I can’t afford new clothes.”
My first suggestion, is that if you are truly getting rid of 1/2 of your items, you may have some things you could sell on yard sale sites or Facebook that could give you a little bit of a clothing fund.
If you really don’t want to go to the effort of selling things (I don’t blame you)….here is another fun idea:
Nickel Auctions: a Fun Girl’s Night Idea
Someone gave me this idea at a conference and I thought it was wonderful.
What is a Nickel Auction?
A nickel auction is what happens after you and your friends declutter and bag up your belongings. Maybe everyone you invite has gone through the 30-day challenge, or maybe everyone just spends a good solid few days bagging things up.
As things are being bagged, reserve one bag specifically for items you think someone else could even possibly have interest in adopting. Something that might bring someone else joy. This might even be themed strictly around clothing and accessories. Or kid’s clothes, or whatever.
These are items that will be auctioned off at the nickel auction.
How Does a Nickel Auction Work?
Each person will take a turn showcasing their items, and those in attendance will have an opportunity to bid on things, starting bid of one nickel.
The point isn’t to get money off your things, the point is for others to go home with something they love for a dang good deal.
A nickel auction party is centered around just having a funny good time together, and most likely involves some good food and celebration of your hard work.
Caution: Be very hesitant about trading your junk for more junk. Keep in mind that you just spend some good effort DEJUNKING and don’t come home with more THINGS that you will need to dejunk later. Handle each item you are considering, and make sure it deserves a place in your home.
