After living in Florida for 5 years my husband and I realized there is more to Florida than Mickey Ears, Miami hustle and bustle, and crazy island drivers (I know from experience). Being from the west coast, we missed the nature, the tall mountains and the natural peace and quiet the west coast had to offer. Well, after sulking about missing the west coast mountains and tall gorgeous pine trees, we decided to go find our own Florida adventures.
We were SHOCKED what we found! We found peace and tranquility in ways the west could not offer. When we left Florida, we now miss so many of the Florida beautiful outdoors that I’d never even known were there. The everglades, the white sandy beaches, the beautiful warm watered beaches (compared to ANY west coast beach… I’d go back in a heartbeat), and the exciting Florida wildlife.
When we go back, Gulf County, Florida will definitely be on our TOP TO DO LIST. It’s right up our outdoor, adventurous, low-key, no shoes, no shirt, no problems alley. Especially now that we have kiddos too… who love to explore and adventure.
Gulf County, Florida paired with the Gulf County Adventure Guide has everything you’d need for a perfect family vacation all in one! Here are my Top 5 ADVENTURES that would be a must for our family of four.
#1 Kayaking in the Dead Lakes
Have you ever Kayaked in Florida? We once went down to Key Largo to Kayak… It was like nothing we’ve ever experienced. The waters were calm. The ocean was shallow so you can see and explore the sea without getting salty wet. The Gulf County tree stumps twist and wind in the water making perfect perches for all kinds of birds and wildlife.
#2 Exploring the beach
This may seem simple, but have you ever seen baby turtles? I’ve only ever seen them once and it was AMAZING. They break out of their little turtle shells and slowly make their way to the water. They are the cutest little tykes you’ve ever seen. And I can’t wait for my little two year old to experience it with me. (I want to go now just thinking about it). One more reason Gulf County is our perfect next vacation spot, turtles galore. Turtle season is May through October FYI.
# 3 Camping on the beach
We love to go camping, but we are used to being surrounded by trees, rivers, mountains etc. We’d love to try our hand at camping on the beach and Joseph Peninsula State Park in Gulf County looks Magical. Fire by the beach roasting s’mores and if possible maybe even smoking your fresh caught fish. Sounds relaxing laying in the tent with my family being lulled to sleep by the waves.
#4 Visit a New Beach every Day
One Florida feature I miss most are the shallow beaches. You can relax in your beach chairs, catch the warm waves on your feet and legs and still enjoy reading a book. Part of me also wishes I had children while I was in Florida. Parts of the beach are so shallow and perfect for kids to wade in. They are packed with sea shells, sea life, and sand and sand dollars. Once we found 50 sand dollars on the gulf coast. Gulf County offers scalloping in the Bay, shelling at the tip of the Cape, snorkeling, paddle boarding, biking or horseback riding on beach trails, and even watching eagles fly by. What an adventure! Enjoy St Joe’s Beach, Indian Pass Lagoon, St Joseph Peninsula State Park and more.
Or chartering a boat. This is a Win-Win for both my husband and myself. He LOVES to catch fish, and I LOVE to eat fresh caught fish! At Gulf County it’s easy to jump on a charter each day or even a few charters on the same day. Florida water is usually calm, sometimes you can barely see a ripple. Trout and redfish are found in the Bay and Grouper moves in a little closer off shore. I wouldn’t mind relaxing on a boat touring Gulf County while my husband catches dinner!
FLORIDA SUNSETS… and SUNRISES (if you’re an early bird! And even if you’re not… they are well worth it!). The water is peaceful and calm, the colors are vibrant and warm. The clouds mixing with the sky and the ocean makes me want to take a million pictures of it… however, I’ve found that the pictures NEVER compare to the real life experience! Also, at Gulf County you will probably be lucky enough to see a dolphin parade jumping by in the early morning. What more could we ask for!
Doesn’t sound like the typical Florida Vacation? It’s not, but it’s an adventure waiting to happen. Live in the moment, explore, relax, enjoy the fresh air, the new excursions and all the possibilities. My family would love every minute of this Florida Escape.
